4 bedazzled by them. The period in which the Qur'an was being revealed no one could have said this word 'Asmaa-al-dunya'. Therefore, we should not just move on from the Qur'anic words. They contain within them a whole world of facts. The Qu'an says 'Masaabih' meaning shining lamps. So, these are shining stars just like lamps. I have said that it is Allah's mercy that He has arranged these stars and planets in such a way that they look beautiful to us. Indeed, how beautiful they look while shining! If they were exposed to us as they really are then we could not sleep at night. In our times just see how the moon looks to us after it has been exposed. Dear friends! The moon's beauty is legendary since the dawn of civilization. To poets, to literary luminaries it was the object of extraordinary beauty. To children it was 'uncle moon'! It has been an object of universal appreciation because of its extraordinary grace and beauty through the ages. The word 'lunatic' is derived from the world lunar: an exquisite beauty that drives one mad. But when the astronauts lifted the veil from its face it looked dreadful and a barren desert. Indeed, it is His mercy that He did not remove this veil from their true nature so that, to us, these stars look exquisitely beautiful in the open azure sky. For this, we must be thankful to Him that He keeps some realities hidden from us for our own good. He is a merciful God indeed! Dear friends! This one word 'BiMasaabih' has revealed to us that the stars are shining lamps. In fact, there is also another aspect to this and, I think, it would be nice if we could cover this in today's dars. The Qur'an says: Rujumal-lishayaatin “and have made them the object of futile guesses for the evil ones [from among men]: and for them have We readied suffering through a blazing flame (67:5). To explain this verse will require considerably large introduction. Allah has given human beings one thing that is not given to any others in this Universe, and that is, the power of choice, the freedom to choose, the freewill. This is exclusively Allah's attribute, which He has called 'Ruh' or divine energy which exclusively belongs to Him. No one has any part in it. In relation to human beings the Qur'an says: “God infuses into man a spark of His divine energy” (32:9). So, of His divine energy, He gave a little to human beings. Allah's Will and power of choice is infinite and unlimited but, nevertheless, He has given this gift of power of choice and freewill to human beings albeit only to a limited extent. To humans this is a great virtue that has been bestowed by Allah. This is as if humans have God-like characteristics, although only on a small scale. No other being in this Universe has been given this power. Now once given, Allah never takes away this power. He never interferes in human affairs in spite of being the sole owner
